Cộng đồng nhữngngười tình nguyện phát triển và khuyến khíchOpenOffice.org, phần mềm văn phòng tự do hàng đầu, côngbố một thay đổi chủ chốt trong cấu trúc dự án. Sau10 năm phát triển thành công với Sun Microsystems như ngườiđỡ đầu sáng lập và chủ chốt, dự án đã tung ra mộtquỹ độc lập gọi là “Quỹ Tài liệu - DocumentFoundation”, để làm thỏa mãn lời hứa về sự độclập được viết trong điều lệ ban đầu.

Quỹ này sẽ nơi tụtập của một hệ sinh thái mới, nơi mà những cá nhânvà các tổ chức có thể đóng góp và hưởng lợi từ sựsẵn sàng của một bộ phần mềm văn phòng thực sự tựdo. Thecommunity of volunteers who develop and promote OpenOffice.org, theleading free office software, announce a major change in theproject’s structure. After ten years’ successful growth with SunMicrosystems as founding and principle sponsor, the project launchesan independent foundation called "The Document Foundation",to fulfil the promise of independence written in the originalc-harter.

TheFoundation will be the cornerstone of a new ecosystem whe-reindividuals and organisations can contribute to and benefit f-rom theavailability of a truly free office suite. It will generate increasedcompetition and choice for the benefit of customers and driveinnovation in the office suite market. F-rom now on, theOpenOffice.org community will be known as "The DocumentFoundation".

Oracle,who acquired OpenOffice.org assets as a result of its acquisition ofSun Microsystems, has been invited to become a member of the newFoundation, and donate the brand the community has grown during thepast ten years. Pending this decision, the brand "LibreOffice"has been chosen for the software going forward.

TheDocument Foundation is the result of a collective effort by leadingindependent members of the former OpenOffice.org community, includingseveral project leads and key members of the Community Council. Itwill be led initially by a Steering Committee of developers andnational language projects managers. The Foundation aims to lower thebarrier of adoption for both users and developers, to makeLibreOffice the most accessible office suite ever.

Speakingfor the group of volunteers, Sophie Gautier - a veteran of thecommunity and the former maintainer of the French speaking languageproject - has declared: "We believe that the Foundation is a keystep for the evolution of the free office suite, as it liberates thedevelopment of the code and the evolution of the project f-rom theconstraints represented by the commercial interests of a singlecompany. Free software advocates around the world have theextraordinary opportunity of joining the group of founding memberstoday, to write a completely new chapter in the history of FLOSS."

FSFPresident Ric-hard Stallman welcomed LibreOffice release and it'sstated policy of only recommending free software. "I'm verypleased that the Document Foundation will not recommend nonfreeadd-ons, since they are the main freedom problem of the currentOpenOffice.org. I hope that the LibreOffice developers and theOracle-employed developers of OpenOffice will be able to cooperate ondevelopment of the body of the code."

"TheDocument Foundation supports the Open Document Format, and is keen towork at OASIS to the next evolution of the ISO standard," saysC-harles Schulz, member of the Community Council and lead of theNative Language Confederation. "The Document Foundation bringsto the table the point of view of developers, supporters and users,and this might accelerate the adoption process of ODF at governmentand enterprise level."

Ultimately, we envision LibreOffice do for the officeproductivity market what Mozilla Firefox has done for browsers."

MarkShuttleworth, founder and major shareholder of Canonical, the makersof Ubuntu, has declared: "Office productivity software is acritical component of the free software desktop, and the UbuntuProject will be pleased to ship LibreOffice f-rom The DocumentFoundation in future releases of Ubuntu. The Document Foundation'sstewardship of LibreOffice provides Ubuntu developers an effectiveforum for collaboration around the code that makes Ubuntu aneffective solution for the desktop in office environments."

TheNorwegian foundation "Åpne kontorprogram på norsk" ("OpenOffice Suites In Norwegian") is responsible for the Norwegiantranslation of OpenOffice.org, and for promoting OpenOffice.org inNorway. So far the Norwegian project has been administered andfinanced mainly by counties and municipalities, but recently thefoundation has started a process for getting commercial companiesmore actively involved. We realise the need for a more substantialcommercial participation to establish a long-term sustainableproject. Our foundation notes that the other Nordic countries, amajority of the European countries, as well as a range of worldwidebig companies like Google, Novell, Canonical and Red Hat are nowcooperating with The Document Foundation. We believe this is theright way forward also for Norway. A cooperation with The DocumentFoundation will make it easier to cre-ate more innovative anduser-friendly solutions integrated with the LibreOffice suite.Eliminating license barriers and obtaining easy access to source codeand standards will facilitate further development of related andintegrated surrounding products.
